It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasnt with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the schools coach and asked him what had happened. "I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him," he explained uncomfortably. "I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide."
I bit back my frustration (懊恼). I knew the coach meant well-he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer-thats all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldnt look at me.It was I who first broke the silence. “Why don’t you choose to run?” I asked in an enquiring voice. Hearing my words, David felt shameful as his cheeks flushed.David explained that he understood what his coach did was to protect him from being teased by kids from other school, which was his choice, too. However, I stressed that the big cross-country run was the competition of a long-term endeavor that he had been applying so he should not let others’ laughter prevent him from doing what he really desired to do. After hearing my encouraging speech, David lifted his head and raised his eyes, casting me a determined look - the kind that said he would run for himself.
I watched as David moved up the starting line with the other runners. In no time, they were on their mark. All the other participants rushed out like an arrow the moment the starters gun sounded. Slowly as David began the race, he kept running on. At the sprint moment, tripped by his feet, David suddenly fell down onto the ground. Happily, David stood up on his feet quickly with the cheers of encouragement not only from his schoolmates but from other school kids. Without hesitation, he pressed forward. Eventually, David finished the run amid tremendous applause, with his big toothy smile shining like a diamond. It was determination and others’ kindness that was what it took to conquer his fear and accomplish his goal.
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.Frustrated and confused , he struggled to tell me his decision.“I will not run.” while rubbing his head to offer a touch of comfort , I said “David, some unfair prejudice may come from some people. But there are definitely others, who will hold a different opinion. They will be pleased and proud of you. The most important thing lies in insisting on whatever is right and whatever you truly want to do. ” After keeping silent for a moment, David eventually gave a nod of understanding. “Thank you, my dear teacher. I really want to run and I will not drop out just because of being possibly laughed at . ” Then, wearing his usual toothy smile, he participated in the match .
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. With the starting gun sounded, all the runners ran as fast as they could. Although David had tried his best, he still lagged behind shortly after the beginning of the match. Worse still, he fell over out of a sudden. A loud cry of “come on” came from most audiences, which gave him great strength. He immediately jumped to his feet to continue the run. I never hesitated to believe that David could finish his run. He is a “man” of great diligence, bravery and determination. By the finish line, there was a crowd of people waiting anxiously. Being one of them, I held my breath to wait for David. Soon the first runner turned up, followed by the second, and all the other runners except David. Just when I was worrying whether something dangerous had happened to him, he appeared with a slow but steady pace. Everyone present was enthusiastically applauding for him.
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. Looking at his drooping head, which showed no sign of happiness, I knew it is time for me to say something. “Don’t be afraid that the kids from other schools would laugh at you. Just trust yourself! Having practiced so much, you can also do what others do.” I uttered comfortably. After hearing my words, David raised his head and looked at me with his teary eyes, stammering in a low voice, “Can ... can I run? What if they laugh at me?” “YES! You can run if you want! Don’t care what others think!” I replied in a determined tone. All of a sudden, I saw the sparkle in his eyes and meanwhile, I heard “I will run!”.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. As the gunshot rang out, all the players, except David, dashed forward. David swung his feet forward slowly with his small body rocking side to side, but nobody laughed at him. Instead, everyone exclaimed in chorus, “Come on, David! You can do it!” They seemingly understood how toughit wasfor David to run and how determined he wasto accomplish the run. With the encouragement and the strong will, David eventually made it! Small as he was for his age, I clearly saw his usual big toothy smile emerging at that time. Only then did I realize that it was strong determination that could conquer whatever difficulty came in the way.
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldnt look at me.Even before I said anything, he began to sob, hiding his face in his hands. I gave him an encouraging pat on the shoulder, saying gently, “Every time you try your best to challenge yourself, your big toothy smile seems to light up the whole world. I can understand your anxiety, but the brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. You always cherish every chance to practise and we are all proud of your confidence and strong will. Believe in yourself and just go for it!”Wiping tears from his face, David stood up and hugged me tightly, “Thank you for your consideration.”
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.I was extremely delighted to see that he wore a shining smile on his face again. On hearing the sound of the signal gunshot, David struggled to sprint for the finish line. The route seemed like a long journey for such a small boy with a brain disease. However, he kept running without hesitation, despite the fact that others were far ahead. When the small figure finally crossed the finish line, all the audience broke into warm cheers for him instead of laughing at him. It was the moment that he shone like a diamond. In my mind, he was the great hero who never gave up.
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldnt look at me. Worried and anxious, I patted his back with a soft voice:" Its not your fault, you can make your dream come true as long as you follow your heart. What your coach said is just his idea. However, you can make a difference." Hearing what I said, David raisedhis head slowly. His face full of tears, his eyes were filled with determination. "Ill try!" he said in a determined voice and moved up without hesitation.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. Young and thin as he was, I considered David as a big and tough man at the moment. Suddenly, he turned back and waved towards me with a big smile, I answered back with a wave, thinking: "he will finally win". Severalminutes later, the running began. With determined faith, David ran with all his strength. Finally, the match is over. No sooner had he finished the run then he ran to me and hugged me. "Thank you. I made it!"
