After filling out 50 applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get—a teaching job in what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was 14—teaching English.

School started, I was teaching English. I worked hard, only taking time off to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class, 17 boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic(理想主义的)teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs (纸团)and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.

In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounded reasonable, but the text obviously ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was the headmaster known to be the strictest, most demanding and quickest to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.

My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed (锉)their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After 20 minutes, he left silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly proud that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period, I had to face him.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150 左右;

After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door.

Inspired by his advice, I walked toward the classroom, determined to make a change.?

?I:

a young diealistic teacher;

worked hard, taught sixth-grade class who ignored discipline

?the headteacher:

known to be the strictest, most demanding and quickest to fire inexperienced teachers

After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door. ...

段2:

Inspired by his advice, I walked toward the classroom, determined to make a change. ...

After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door. Popping my head in, I found my big demanding boss sitting in the sofa reading something. Overwhelmed with anxiety, I walked slowly over to him, my head down. What I had been prepared for was his strictest scold, and even the unemployment. However, to my greatest surprise, my boss asked me to sit down behind him, saying, “Nothing is more important than interacting with students. Why not give them chances to present what they think? And of course, bad behaviors are unacceptable. ...” (83 words)

Inspired by his advice, I walked toward the classroom, determined to make a change. In the coming class, I adopted what my boss just told me and tried getting my students involved in what we were learning. It really worked, which gave me great courage as well as confidence in teaching. Time going by, I gradually found my boss more easy-going than strict. Not only did he give effective suggestions on how to get along with different students, but also how to improve my abilities of teaching. His generous and timely guidance later led me to a successful teacher. (85 words)

After class, I took a deep breath and walked into his office. I said nothing, just thinking that I would be fired. To my great surprise, my boss didn’t glare at me with burning eyes. Instead, he patiently named my problems that as a teacher I shouldn’t have ignored the bad behavior of my students. We discussed how I could deal with the situation I met. Finally, I was encouraged and full of confidence when leaving the office.

Fifteen years later, I still drive that winding road to the same school. My boss and I always sit together, talking about the new students and their problems. In fact, he becomes a teacher of mine by teaching me the truth of education — “The secret to education lies in respecting the pupils.” Thanks to the help I received from him that first year, I have grown as a successful educator as he is now.
