We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. “You want to join them, don't you?” I whispered to him, trying to break the silence first. Hearing what I said, he raised his head slowly, looked into my eyes and attempted to say something, but failed. Patting him on the shoulder gently, I continued,” Anyone who always participates to his best deserves to have a try for himself.” This time, he nodded his head firmly, with his usual big toothy smile spreading across his face again.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. As the gun cracked, with all his strength, David swung his feet forward as fast as he could. However, it did not take long for him to fall behind others. Time wearing on, when some students became too exhausted to move forward,David kept stumbling forward at his unique pace, thus enabling him to pass several participants in the end. Hardly had he crossed the finishing line when I rushed to gather him in my arms, shouting, “Great job! I know you could make it!”. Still gasping for air, he choked, “Thank you! This is the first time that I has not finished last!”
