Every commercial flight you have ever taken has been recorded. It's the "black box" that searches and rescues crews, scanning the crash site at any time when an air crash occurs.Next year, our planet will get one of these disaster recorders as well.
Called Earth's Black Box,the project is meant to record every step on the way to our planet's destruction. The device will be roughly the length of a school bus,and will be wrapped in 3-inch-thick steel, designed to survive disasters.Just as a plane's black box is built in the safest part of a plane,Earth's Black Box will be placed in the most secure location on Earth,Tasmania, apparently. When it goes online,Earth's Black Box will be filled with hard drives recording and storing climate-related information. The silent observer will constantly absorb information to provide a faithful account of the events that lead to the destruction of the planet, hold record for future generations, and inspire urgent action.
This project, which is co-operated by the University of Tasmania,a communications firm called Clemenger BBDO,and an art collective called the Glue Society,is to be built in early 2022.As an art piece,it is certainly striking. The concept images show a structure lined with solar panels and situated in a remote desert.
"The idea is that if the Earth does crash as a result of climate change, this indestructible recording device will be there for whoever's left to learn from that," said Jim Curtis, executive creative director at Clemenger BBDO, "It's also there to hold leaders to account-to make sure their action or inaction is recorded."
The box will collect temperature measurements, ocean acidification data, data on land use, energy consumption and human population growth. It will also collect news headlines, social media posts, and information from key climate change conferences between heads of state.
"It comes to us at a time when the planet is on track to face an increase in global temperatures over pre-industrial levels.Fresh water is becoming rare, and a record number of species are going extinct. The clear intention of this black box is not simply a recorder of our ending, but instead a reminder to help push us away from it," say its creators.
(1) What will the Earth's Black Box do?______
A. It will safeguard the Internet.
B. It will control energy consumption.
C. It will process the information collected.
D. It will offer information for future generations.
(2) What do we know about the Earth's Black Box?______
A. It is made of steel.B. It is of some art value.
C. It will be on sale in 2022.D. It looks like a school bus.
(3) What can we infer from paragraph 4?______
A. Climate crisis is a serious threat to the world.
B. The Earth's Black Box will help people survive.
C. The world will crash due to climate problems.
D. Leaders will take action to deal with climate problems.
(4) What's the purpose of the Earth's Black Box?______
A. To gain all the information related to the earth.
B. To improve the technique of the black box on the plane.
C. To alarm people of the serious condition of environment.
D. To show the combination of environment-protection and art.

How much time do you spend doing research before you make a decision? The answer for many of us,it turns out,is "hardly any",even with major investments. In our research,we found people who tend to make such "jumps" in their inference may pay a wide range ofcosts.
We worked with more than 600 people from the general population. We used a thinking game.In this game, players encountered someone fishing from one of two lakes:in one lake, most of the fish were red,and in the other, most were gray. The fisher would catch onefish at a time and stop only when players thought they could say which lake was being fished. Some players had to see many fish before making a decision.Others, the jumpers, stopped after only one or two.
We also asked participants questions to learn more about their other thinking patterns. We found that the fewer fish a player needed to see,the more errors individuals made in other beliefs, inferences and decisions. For instance, the earlier a person jumped, the more likely they were to false theories, such as the idea that the Apollo moon landings had been a lie.
Psychological researchers commonly distinguish between two pathways of thought:System 1 reflects ideas that come to the mind without effort.System 2 is about conscious and effortful reasoning that is analytic and mindful.
We found that jumpers and nonjumpers are equally affected by automatic System 1.The jumpers, however,do not engage in controlled System 2 reasoning to the same degree as nonjumpers.
To solve this,we adopted a method called metacognitive(元认知)training(MCT)and created an online version where participants face their own biases(偏见).For example, people tackle puzzles, and after they make mistakes related to specific biases, these errors are called out so that the participants can learn about the missteps and other ways of thinking through the problem at hand.
(1) What did the researchers find?______
A. Jumpers behave and think abnormally.
B. Jumpers show many kinds of thinking errors.
C. People research a lot before making decisions.
D. People who hesitate a lot tend to jump to conclusions.
(2) How did the researchers conduct the experiment?______
A. By analyzing data.B. By carrying out interviews.
C. By making comparison.D. By consulting other studies.
(3) What does the underlined word "endorse" in paragraph 3 probably mean?______
A. Support.B. Teach.C. Test.D. Reject.
(4) What does the last paragraph suggest?______
A. Nonjumpers often skip System 1.
B. Jumpers can be trained to think twice.
C. Nonjumpers are good at tackling puzzles.
D. Jumpers are weak in reasoning and analyzing.

A coat made from muscle sounds like something straight out of a horror movie, but thanks to the work of researchers at Washington University in St.Louis,it may become real in the not too distant future.
No actual animal cells are needed for the process.Instead, the process starts from a human protein called titin. "It's the largest protein known in nature," said Cameron Sargent,a Ph.D.student in the Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences and a first author on the paper. This makes it very resilient(有弹性的).
Researchers transformed bacteria to put together smaller parts of the protein into an extremely firm structure. They ended up with a protein with a high molecular(分子的)weight and about 50 times larger than the average bacterial protein. Then, they used a special process, transforming the proteins into fibers about 10 times thinner than a human hair.
Researchers intended for a fiber especially strong for clothes, but the process could be adjusted for any desired quality. You could make clothes that are softer or dry quicker. "The beauty of the system is that it's really a platform that can be applied anywhere," researchers said. "We can take proteins from different natural contexts, then put them into this platform for polymerization and create larger, longer proteins for various material applications. "
Furthermore, because the fibers are almost impossible to distinguish from natural muscle, they can also be used in medical procedures, for instance for stitching(缝合)up wounds. It also breaks down easily, thus causing less pollution to the environment. So,would you wear clothes made from muscle?
(1) What makes the fiber resilient?______
A. Its quality.B. Its structure.C. Its weight.D. Its size.
(2) What is paragraph 3 mainly about?______
A. The intention of making the fibers.B. The process of making the fibers.
C. The function of the fibers.D. The quality of the fibers.
(3) What do we know of the fibers mentioned in the text?______
A. They are hard to tell from natural muscles.
B. They are taken from similar natural context.
C. They are of the same price as other materials.
D. They are originally intended to be much softer.
(4) What is the best title for the text?______
A. Make Clothes out of MusclesB. Advantages of Man-made Fibers
C. A Breakthrough in Fiber MakingD. Innovative Material Ready for Market

For many young people, including young parents, the smartphone plays an important part in their life and work. They also depend on it for entertainment, playing games, watching movies and viewing TikTok short videos.
A young couple,Paul and Sue,have a three-month-old baby, who they named Tony.He is a lovely baby.Like most babies,he sleeps about 16 hours a day.Unlike other babies,he seldom cries when he is hungry, sleepy or has a wet diaper(尿布).When he is awake,he smilesand moves his little hands and legs while watching what's happening around him. That's why taking care of Tony isn't too much trouble for Paul and Sue.They still have time to stick to their habit of watching TikTok videos.
One beautiful sunny spring Sunday,Paul and Sue decided to take Tony to a park nearby for the first time, thinking that the sunshine and fresh air were good for him. They put Tony into the stroller(婴儿车)and pushed him to the park, which was about a fifteen-minute walk. There were many people in the park, old people sitting on benches and chatting, boys playing football on the lawn, girls running about and young parents like them pushing strollers.
After a short walk in the park,Paul and Sue sat down on a bench.Soon other young parents came around. They greeted each other, had small talks about the good weather, and chatted about their babies. When the young couple found Tony went to sleep, they covered him with a small blanket, pulled the canopy(罩子),said goodbye to other young parents and wheeled the stroller towards home.Halfway,a cry of the baby came out from the stroller.Paul and Sue were shocked.
It's unusual for Tony to cry and the crying sounded strange to them.
