How are you? I am writing to invite you to attend a one-on-one interview at our school radio station for a program named “Talk and Talk.” Basically, this program, tailored for our students, regularly invites teachers to share their life experiences and stories that students can draw upon. Obviously, given your diverse background, you will be an ideal interviewee since you can offer some unique wisdom and perspectives to our students. We sat down next to each other, but David would not look at me. I decided to share with him my own story. I told him that when I was a kid, I had trouble talking with others due to my terrible stutter and shied away from any public speaking. With tears in my eyes, I recollected my painful yet inspiring experiences about how I had triumphedover my fear of speaking and ended upbecoming a teacher. Upon hearing this, David was quite engaged and told me that he could empathize with me and would follow in my footsteps.

Then, I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. As expected, things didn't go well when David stumbled again and again and lagged far behind other students throughout the run. However, he bit the bullet and toughed it out. With dogged determination and grit, he crossed the finishing line. Even though he did not pull off any prize, he triumphed over his fear and boosted his self-efficacy. To quote Roosevelt, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I’m Li Hua, the person in charge of the English programme Talk and Talk of the School Broadcasting station. On behalf of all the members of our station, I sincerely invite you to partake in our talk show next week. Here is a brief schedule about it.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. “You are no different than anybody else is.” I said. But he still refused to look at me, his head buried in his arms with a whispered “no”. He huddled like a wounded cat. “Well, you are right. You are indeed different from others.” As he began to sob slightly, I smiled, “You have your toothy smile on your face every day; you can always make the best of everything you are doing, stick to it and never give up. Spill the beans, you are not an ordinary 10-year-old boy.” He slowly raised his head and looked at me. Though there was a doubt in his eyes, I could see the confidence regained. “Come on, the run is about to begin. Just do as usual.”

Iwatched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. As the shots of the race rang out, everyone just rushed forward, only a small thin body was staggering behind. But, as usual, he didn’t give up. He clenched his teeth and swung his legs with all the strength, leaves crunching beneath the tiny feet. As David approached the finish line, all the runners cheered him on. “You can do it!” They clapped and yelled. In the applause of people, David finished the run, and the most familiar but unforgettable thing finally appeared again—a usual big toothy smile.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. Seeing his face filled with anxiety, I felt sad, deciding to talk something with him. Turning to David, I smiled, “David, Look, what a wonderful event!” “Yeah!” David smiled weakly, bowing his head. Patting on his shoulder, I said in a soft voice, “I heard you had worked so hard for this event. How I admire your strong determination. Why not give it a try?”

“Teacher, I am afraid kids from other schools will laugh at me. I think what the coach said is right.” murmured David, with glum looks on his face. “But David, what counts most is to particpate to the best of your ability in whatever we’re doing. Do you agree?” After a temporary hesitation, David nodded in agreement, finally deciding to join in the cross-country team.

I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.With a blast of the gun, David tried his best to shoot from the start line, but he failed. Painful anda bitembarrased as he was, he still dragged his feet to keep moving forward. The sun was beating down, the hot weather suffocating. After what seemed years, David, rocking his small body like a cat on a hot brick, eventually finished his run as the last one. When approaching the finish line, he burst into a big toothy smile and waved to me with excitement, crying “ I made it! I made it!” All the kids including those from other schools erupted into a big applause, cheering for his determination and persistence. At that moment, a flush of admiration and joy swept over me.

Never forget why you started.” I patted his shoulder lightly: “You need to show them who you are. I have faith in you.” Hearing this, He wiped the tears off, and walked hard towards the starting line step by step.

I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. He took a deep breath and blew on his hands. The eyes of the audience were fixed on him. So restless was he that he began to tremble all over. The competition bagan. All the contestants darted away except David. He dragged his feet with all his might. Meanwhile, all the audience were touched by his perseverance deeply and applauded warmly. David ended up with the last place in this race but everyone cheered him lustily. I dashed toward David and gave him a hug: “You made it big! I am so proud of you!” David wore a shining smile on his face. He said softly: “Thank you very much sir. You taught me the most important lesson of my life--Don’t forget why we started.”
