The automobile industry is spending billions on self-driving cars, just so we can sit in the back seat like somehigh-powered corporate executive. But what if we quite like driving?
On holiday a few years ago,I spent hours being transported on trains, buses and planes. Then, finally, came the section of the holiday during which I hired a set of wheels.
After decades of marriage, it was not often that you received real praise from your partner but on the highwaysof Crete compliments came with every successful action."Oh well done!"said Jocasta, her voice full of admiration as I navigated a roundabout without killing us both.
Into the roundabout(环岛)Iwent slowing down as we entered, then speeding up as we returned to the straight.
Really it was like driving in a F1 race.
We turned right. then right againfollowing the GPS navigation system and found ourselves in a small Cretartown.I spoke strictly to the GPS:"We don't want to be herewe want the highway.
It instructed me to turn right once more. With every turn the street narrowed. It was like being in a magical shrinking room.
We retracted(缩回)the side mirrors.Wetook another turn. The new road was even narrower, the walls so close you felt compelled to hold your breath.
Another car appeared coming towards us from the opposite direction. The driver gestured, telling me I would have to make way. But how?I didn't have the nerve to back up along the impossibly narrow road.
There was a narrow garage opening to one side,a small side street to the other.IfI could squeeze the car forward into the garage, I could then back into the side streetallowing the other car to pass.
Locals arrived, standing on various sides of the vehicle, helpfully indicating that Ihad a centimetre to spare here
a millimetre there. There were brick walls on both sides of the car. There was zero chance that I wouldn't damage thevehicle.

Then with the instructions of all the locals turning my head left and right looking back hundreds of times. I backed it into the side street.
The other car passed. The driver gave me a grateful wave.In relief, I waved back to her, finding my handstrembling. Tired out and all sweaty, I lay back on the seat breathed in and out to steady my nerves for a while, therreluctantly sat straight. Jocasta swiveled towards me."You're my hero," she squeezed my hand as she said. We set off again.I accelerated towards the highway. Who would swap all this for a self-drive car?

“Willyou do me a favor, Achenyo?” Mama called as she looked up from her weaving.
Besideher was a pile of wild-grass stalks(秆). Mamatook a stalk, laid it along the length of thehalf-finished bag, and began to weave (编织).In the corner were pots of dyes (染料) sheduse to paint the finished bags. “Will youget me some water for the dyes?” “Of course, Mama!”Achenyo picked up a pot asshe ran outside. She didn’t like weaving, although it was a tradition for amother to pass on the trade to her daughter. Outside, Achenyo called to herneighbor Ajuma. Both girls, with pots balanced on their heads, made their wayto the river.
Achenyoand Ajuma soon arrived at the waters edge, and they found a huge surprise. Theriver was gone! In its place was a blanket of dark green leaves and lavender-colored(淡紫色的) flowers. “Oh no!" Achenyo cried.“Mama won’ have water to mix the dyes for her bags. ”When the adults arrived atthe riverbank, they shook their heads, saying “They’ve struck again!"
Lastyear, the rainy season had brought an invasion(入侵) ofwater hyacinths. The plants had covered the river and left no room to dip a potto get water. And now they were back. The adults walked into the water. Theybegan pulling up water hyacinths and throwing them onto the riverbank. Whenthey’d cleared enough plants, the girls filled their pots with water. A pile ofwater hyacinths lay on the riverbank. What a shame to waste such prettyflowers, Achenyo thought. She picked some for Mama, and then the girls headed home. Each day, theyfound the river covered by water hyacinths as if no one had cleared thewaterfront (水边地) the day before. To fill their pots, theyagain had to pull up and throw water hyacinths onto the riverbank. The pile onthe sand grew taller.
Oneday, as Achenyo moved an armful of dried water hyacinths out of her way,she
had an idea. Carrying the plants under her arm, she ran home.

“Mama,
will you teach me to weave?” asked Achenyo eagerly. Mama laughed. It was herwish to pass on the weaving trade to her daughter. But she was doubtful aboutthe water hyacinth stalks. Achenyo showed Mama how difficult it was to break astalk. “I'll teach you. But if it doesn't turn out right, I'll say I told youso.”Achenyo was pleased. “Thank you, Mama!" They wove together every dayafter school. It was a tricky job. The stalks hurt Achenyo's palms, but she wasdetermined to make something beautiful.
Oneafternoon, Achenyo held up her finished work made from water hyacinths."Mama, I've made a school bag to carry my books!" Mama looked overAchenyo's handiwork. It was neatly woven and well decorated. She clapped herhands in pleasure. Achenyo smiled, “I told you so, Mama!" And they alsoshowed it to their neighbors. Inspired by the delicate school bag, they also beganto use the stalks to make bags and baskets. By the end of the rainy season, thevillagers were eager to go to the river every morning to harvest waterhyacinths. They no longer thought of the plant as an invader, but a provider.

It was a long weekend in May 2018 and my friend, Gabe Rosescu, and I were taking a road trip from my home in the city of Weyburn to visit friends in Nelson, British Columbia. We are both adventurous, and we couldn't wait to go hiking and exploring. It was our first trip together since we knew each other.
At around 10:30 am on Thursday, May 17, we were driving about 11 miles west of Creston, on a steep mountain road known as the Crowsnest Highway. I was texting updates to my family and enjoying the view. We weren't aware there'd recently been flooding in the area.
When I looked up from my phone, I saw a wave of mud and an enormous tree rolling down the mountain, right in front of Gabe's car. He tried to stop the car, but it was too late.
I looked at Gabe and we both were in great panic. The mudslide sent our car falling nearly 300 meters down a rocky cliff. It landed on its side among some trees.
I don't know how long we were unconscious(失去知觉的),but I woke up to Gabe's voice with pain.He was slumped(瘫倒)over the steering wheel, and there was blood everywhere. Outside my passenger window there was a steep drop.
Every time I moved, I was hit with violent chest pain. I had broken my sternum, and my right ankle was broken and practically turned backward. Gabe had broken his orbital bone, and nasal and cheek bones. His head was badly hurt and his vision was damaged. But the body is an amazing thing, and somehow we were both able to crawl out of that car.
I was so focused on our survival that I didn't notice how seriously the car was damaged orwhere we were. We had no phone signal, so all we could think to do was yell for help. But mychest hurt too much to even breathe. So Gabe started shouting as loud as he could.

We were shocked when we heard someone call back after just a few minutes.
Fortunately,we were slowly recovering under the care of the medical staff.
范文:
We were shocked when we heard someone call back after just a few minutes. It was a miracle that someone even heard us, let alone responded so quickly. It turned out to be a man who lived nearby. We later learned that he had just moved to the area and wasn't even sure why he had decided to take a walk that day. But he heard our calls for help and came to our rescue. He had been a volunteer firefighter in the past and was able to provide basic first aid until the paramedics arrived.
Fortunately, we were slowly recovering under the care of the medical staff. We were both airlifted to a hospital in Kelowna, where we underwent multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation. It was a long and painful road to recovery, but we were grateful to be alive. The accident had left us both with physical and emotional scars, but we were determined to overcome them and move forward. The kindness and compassion shown by those who had helped us gave us strength, and we knew that we would never forget that terrible day on the Crowsnest Highway.

Eric was a nine-year-old boy who lived with his single mother, Stacey and sister,Lily. They lived a hard life. Eric felt bad for their situation but worse for himself, especially in school.
Eric's leather boots were worn out. They didn't protect his feet from the rain, and his socks became totally wet as water went through the holes in his shoes. Stacey attempted to fix the holes but it was no use. Eric still walked to school with that pair of broken shoes. How much he wished he could also have new comfortable and expensive shoes his classmates wore!
One day,Eric returned from school and complained to Stacey, “It was raining today. Water has leaked into my shoes again. I hate my boots! Why can't you get me new ones?" Stacey was sad and helpless. “I spent our last savings on your sister's medicine. She's sick. Eric you know that. You need to act like a responsible big brother!” she answered. Tears welled up in Eric's eyes.“I hate you!” he shouted. “You only care about Lily! You don't love me!” Then he cried and ran to his room.
After preparing dinner, Stacey went to his room with his dinner plate. “I'm sorry,Eric,” she whispered to comfort him. “We're going through a very tough journey recently. But I'll get you new shoes in the future."However,Eric refused to listen to her.
The next day, when Eric went to class, he took his seat quietlyand hid his feet under hischair, as usual. He was embarrassed to show his boots. As the math teacher Mrs Fletcher enteredthe class, all the students greete her.
“Today, we have a very special friend with us," she smiled.
“Everyone, please welcome Ben, your new classmate." Soon after, a boy with a pair of crutches(拐杖)entered. The new boy only had one leg. Eric was shocked. He and all his classmates

I'm grateful for what I have.” All of the students were touched by Ben's words and clapped for his courage and optimism from the bottom of their hearts.
Inspired by Ben, Eric realized he should appreciate what he had. After school,he gladly walked home. When reaching home, he knocked at Mom's door and apologized sincerely, “Mom, I'm sorry I shouted at you. I should thank you for everything you have done for me and I will take good care of Lily like a responsible big brother." Hearing what he said, Stacey hugged Eric tightly, with relieved tears pouring down her cheeks silently. From that day on, Eric became confident and didn't hide his feet under his chair any more.

My husband and I wandered the tropical gardens of San Diego's Bahia Resort Hotel. We came to a large pool. A wet nose appeared out of the water and a seal (海豹) climbed up onto a rock to greet us. “Look!”I cried, delighted.
"Her name is Gracie,” my husband said, reading a sign by the fence that enclosed the pool. A moment later, another seal swam past. "And that must be Billy," he added.
Gracie dove back into the water and chased after Billy. We watched in wonder as they raced around the pool happily.
The next day I found myself back at the seals' pool. Gracie and Billy were enjoying the morning sunshine on a large rock. I was surprised to learn that Gracie and Billy were blind.
They were thought to have suffered a head injury in stormy Alaska waters, which caused them to lose their sight. They needed to be taught to survive in a world of darkness. I felt sorry for them,as they could no longer return to the sea. At the same time,I was amazed how they had adapted to their new environment. They moved easily and beautifully, their lack of sight seeming to be no problem at all. I spent hours watching them playing happily in the pool, nosing large red and blue balls.
Three years later, in spring 2020, a serious illness damaged my eyes, making me almost blind. My eyes had to be protected from sunlight, so I couldn't go outside. I sat in my bedroom with the shades drawn, unable to read or even watch television. I was How would I possibly manage? I felt so depressed that I began to lose hope.

Then I remembered something that gave me the hope I needed. Yes, I thought of the two seals. They got used to their new life in the pool regardless of the great changes when they were unable to go back to the sea where they weresupposed to be. What's more, they managed to enjoy a happy life though they lived in darkness as a result of their blindness. Now I was faced with the same situation. Luckily, the two seals had set a good example for me.
So I made up my mind to live like those two seals. Though I was kept from the outside world, I did find pleasure in my small world, enjoying chatting with friends, singing with my family, listening to music, and eating delicious food. The seals'diving and swimming around their pool reminded me of exercise. So I climbed up and down the stairs every morning to keep fit. Eventually I became confident again about myself. Thanks to my two inspiring friends,I learned how to enjoy life when going through a difficult time.
