"Jordi! Wake up!" Father's voice called fromn the hallway, and I sat up quickly. The day finally came! The day that I would be a casteller-a tower builder.Mama had breakfast ready. “Are you prepared for your moment of fame?”Papa asked in excitement. My throat was suddenly very dry, and the bread got stuck as I swallowed.Taking a big swig of juice, I put on a smile. “I'm ready." I would do well. I wwanted to make him proud.

Here in the eastern part of Spain, casteller groups were very popular. My city hosted the competition this year. Before that, I'd watched my parents compete. But never before had I been part of the tower. It was so high. And it sometimes fell.I was hesitant to be up there. But for the past year, I had been practicing the climb.I was twelve, and

I must not be a coward(胆小鬼). So for the first time in a competition,I would help build the tower!

In town, I saw that the center was packed with people and casteller teams from all over the country. Hands sweating, I was waiting for our turn to compete. Mom came and patted me on the shoulder."Have focus.Have faith." I nodded to show that I understood and would do my best to follow the suggestions.

Soon,too soon,it was our turn.

My father and three of the strongest men stood in a circle facing each other as they held tightly to eachother's arms. Four more strong men stepped behind, each wrapping his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then fifty more men and women crowded behind and began pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together.

Our base was solid. Four smaller men climbed onto the backs of the base group and stood on their shoulders. They then grabbed onto each other's arms and held firmly, creating a strong second tier(层).Another group of men would form the third tier. Then, a group of women, including Mom,started climbing and began to form the fourth tier. Our tower was growing taller and taller.

"Jordi, Easy!"My mother whispered the words.

范文:

Then suddenly it was kids' turn to make the last tier. Tightly gripping the clothing of those we were climbing over, we passed the first two tiers without difficulty. By the time I reached the fourth tier, nerves made my hands sweat and my knees tremble, for I was very high off the ground. As I climbed onto my mother's shoulders, my foot slipped off and I slid down. Instinctively, I clutched Mom's arm with all my might. Feeling the tower below swaying a bit, my heart began a crazy dance in my chest. “Stay focus!” Exclaimed a kid beside me. Sweat trickling down my face, I took a deep breath to calm myself.I could not be responsible for ruining our tower. I could not disgrace my parents or myself. I could not let my team down.

"Jordi, Easy!”My mother whispered the words. I calmed my heart and again placed my foot on Mom's lap. This time, I grasped her shirt and firmly pushed myself to a stand, balancing on one foot. With the other foot, I stepped up and onto her shoulders, and then brought the other foot up. Reaching deep inside to feel my balance, with focus and trust, I rose slowly out of my crouch and straightened my knees. I worked hard to hold myself straight and still until our tower was complete. Whether or not we won this competition, I knew we had done what we had set out to do. With faith in each other and with focus on the task, we built our tower.Eventually,I became a casteller!

The whol class was dressed up.My name was on the cover of the program in bright yellow characters. I couldn't believe it when I saw my name. Not that it was my name, but that it wasn't Renee's. Renee and I had been classmates since kindergarten She was always ahead of me.Dance class needs a big finish? Renee was picked. The school plays? Renee would have the leads while I was cast as her mother or sister or neighbor. I even played her dog once. The only time Iever came in ahead of Renee was at roll call(点名)Cindy comes before Renee.I count that as a victory!

The choir concert tryouts were stressful. We waited in the library as Ms. Jenkins called us individually into the choir room. By the time she called me, I was shaking. When I came back to the library. Renee smiled at me.Ms. Jenkins called her name and Renee calmly followed her. She was still calm and smiling when her tryout was over.

When Ms. Jenkins announced who had made the special choral group(合唱队). I got the solo? ] glanced over at Renee. She smiled broadly and gave me the thumbs-up sign. Oh, that's another thing. She is always so nice.

Renee was next to hug me.It felt awkward."Thanks. Renee."was all I could get myself to say."It was nothing." she said, flashing me her usual sunny smile,"You've always been there for me all these years! That's what friends are for.""You're right,"I said slowly, beginning to like the feeling of being her firiend, and hugged her tightly, "That's what friends are for."

Her pale face stood out against the blackness of her hair. She looked much younger than her fifteen years,a wom coat hanging loose above her. We weren't supposed to take a child, but an emergency call came through that momning. A home was needed for a young girl immediately.

I,together with four children, hurried to get her room ready. The kids were great. Joanne, our second-eldest daughter, did the cleaning and Margaret, Rob and Jeff helped make the bed. I felt my heart pounding in my chest. I was excited, but scared at the same time because I was told an adopted child might give us a lot of trouble.

That afternoon,Trudy arrived with the social worker Mrs. Kline. She stepped into the front hall and stood against the wall. I will never forget the look in her eyes. The first thing that came to my mind was that she looked like a hunted animal. The children moved towards her, and Jeff grabbed her hand and said proudly, “Come and see your room. I helped make your bed.”Trudy pulled back, speechless.

At this point, I stepped towards her and said,“Welcome to our home, Trudy."She looked at me with such blank eyes. But with her head bowed, she simply said, eyes moving back and forth like a creature looking for a way out, "No,thank you.”

For the first two weeks,Trudy was very quiet. She would come into the kitchen while I was working, and we would discuss school and what she would like to do in the future. Mrs.Kline had given us all the information about her history, but I never mentioned the terrible things that had happened to her.

As the days went by,Trudy became a delight to have around. Very quickly, it seemed like she had always been with us.The girls would sit in each other's rooms and giggle (咯咯笑)like typical teenagers. It was a sound that warmed my soul. However, when they talked about new clothes, Trudy fell silent again.

I took Joanne shopping for a winter coat, and Trudy came too.

Back home, I presented the jacket Trudy had tried on.

范文:

I took Joanne shopping for a winter coat, and Trudy came too. Thrilled, Joanne tried on one coat after another. Trudy stared at her with eyes wide open. “It looks so nice on you!” she babbled, but her eyes were glued to a jacket. Then, Joanne encouraged her to try it on. Excitement shining on her face, Trudy picked the jacket out, posing at ease. However, she turned, replaced it, and rejoined Joanne. While they were busy, I quietly asked the salesperson to wrap up the jacket.

Back home, I presented the jacket Trudy had tried on. Unexpectedly, Trudy startedsobbing. “No one has ever bought me a beautiful jacket like this.” My voice shook, “You really deserve it.” I slid into my room so she would not see me crying. Suddenly, a knock came at the door, where stood my children. Margaret stepped forward, “Mom, we hope we can keep her forever.” Others nodded in agreement. My eyes welled up with tears, whispering, “Trudy is really lucky, but Iam luckiest.”

5. 2023届江苏省徐州市5月模拟考试英语读后续写题目:

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mama and Papa were like most parents. They wanted the best for their kids. Jeff and Jenna were like most kids. They wanted the best for themselves-the best place in front of the TV,the biggestpiece of cake and the most candies.

One night, when the noisy kids were sound asleep, Mama lay awake worrying. She sighed a big sigh, thinking how to teach Jeff and Jenna to mend their selfish ways. Lecturing didn' t work.

As Mama lay there, she thought about how kids learn. Kids learn by doing. They learn to walk by walking. That' s the answer, thought Mama. The kids will learn to help others by helping others. But questions of who, when, and where went unanswered as she drifted off to sleep.

To her pleasure, those questions were soon answered. The next day, they happened to meet Mrs. Marie, the elderly widow who lived just down the road, at the checkout line at the supermarket.

Mama asked the kids to say hello to Mrs. Marie, about whom the kids were a little nervous. Shewas really old and kind of bent over. And there was that crooked cane she used when she walked. Butthe real reason they were nervous about her was that two days ago their ball had gone into her yardand knocked over some flowers in the garden and broke the glasses of the attic. They had neverapologized.

When Mama and the kids were loading their groceries into the car, Mrs. Marie came out of the supermarket pushing her little collapsible shopping cart.

“Where are you going?” called Mama.

“To the bus stop,” she said, “The bus goes right by my house.” “So does our car,” said Mama.

注意:

1.续写词数应为150 左右;

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Mama asked the kids to help Mrs. Marie into the car and put her things in the trunk(后备箱).

As the car was approaching Mrs. Marie's house, Mama made a decision.

范文:

Mama asked the kids to help Mrs. Marie into the car and put her things in the trunk(后备箱) My goodness, it must be wonderful to have such helpful kids." Mrs. Marie exclaimed. When the kids realized they were being praised, they broke into a smile, leaning forward to hear better. Mama noticed their change. Here it was the chance. She asked Mrs. Marie, “Is it convenient for you to live alone?”, to which Mrs. Marie' s answer was definitely not. Sometimes, it was really difficult for an old lady like her to get helpers.

As the car was approaching Mrs. Marie' s house, Mama made a decision. “Kids, shall we help Mrs. Marie do some chores?" Sensing Mrs. Marie was looking at them hopefully, the kids said yes though hesitant. Jenna helped Mrs. Marie into the room, while Jeff brought in all the items. Mama pitched in and helped. Under guidance, the two of them put the items in place. With Mama' s company, they went upstairs to fix the broken attic window, and then downstairs to water the flowers in the garden. A smile flashing on her face, Mama felt relieved to see that kids had learnt to help others by helping.

The Overturned Bin

“Char stu bao,"I pushed my cart(推车)around table after table of hungry customers. It was Saturday morning -the height of the brunch rush-and everyone in the neighborhood knew that Grandma Wu’s restaurant offered the freshest dim sum.Grandma’s Chinese dishes were so irresistible that customers were numerous.

After a while, my cart was empty and I took some of my favorite char siu bao at the tiny table in the alley(巷子)behind the restaurant But just as I was about to take my first bite, I noticed something strange. Our garbage bins had been knocked over! Trash and half-eaten dim sum littered the ground.

Swallowing my bao, I quickly picked up the mess. Then I headed back inside to help with the rest of the rubbish. I forgot all about the mystery of the knocked-over bins until I took out the trash only to find the garbage bins had tipped over again!

Could it have been the wind? As I cleaned up for a second time,I looked at the darkening sky.A storm was heading our way,but the tree branches were not movingDetermined to avoid cleaning up a third time, I placed three stones on top of the bins.

I was met with another surprise early next moning.Looking out of my window for signs of the storm, I spotted the garbage bins-knocked over again! I complained as it started to rain. That’s when I noticed two yellow eyes staring back at me-it was a little gray cat!

“So you're the one that keeps leaving messes!"Irushed to the alley, finally understanding. I watched as the cat tried to get the half-eaten bao inside.Cats aren’t supposed to eat bao.Garlic could be deadly to cats. But the cat was clearly too hungry to care.

I took a cautious step toward him when there was suddenly a loud thunder above us._

Like all of Grandma's customers, the cat cheered up at the scent(气)ofthe warm char siu bao.

范文:

I took a cautious step toward him when there was suddenly a loud thunder above us. The storm began. The frightened cat dived back into the garbage bin. With the rain picking up, the poor kitty was too scared to come out of his new hiding spot. Luckily, I had an idea. Having grabbed a can of cat food, I went to the kitchen where Grandma was preparing for the day's opening. “May I take that?” I asked, pointing to a plate full of fresh char siu bao. “Help yourself,” Grandma said, and I beaded back outside with it.

Like all of Grandma's customers, the cat cheered up at the scent of the warm char siu bao. I slowly made my way to the garage. Sure enough, the cat followed me inside, happy to be out of the rain. “You can't eat these bao, but I have something better for you." I said, pouring some cat food into a bowl. It wasn't long before Grandma appeared in the doorway. “Grandma, meet my new friend. He loves the smell of your cooking," I said. Grandma chuckled. “Well, it looks like I'll need to expand our menu to include some cat-friendly dim sum options.”
