第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

When it comes to perfect views, it really does take a village. Searching for the most camera-ready communities on the planet, we found four villages that fit the bill. Spend a few minutes there and you will realize that “quaint(古色古香的)”and “charming(有魅力的)”aren’t just adjectives; they are a way of life.

Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia

The village seems to disappear into the sky and the blue horizon. All the houses are painted white, the skies are clear, and the backdrop includes the Bay of Tunis which is only in a deeper shade of blue. It’s not surprising that the atmosphere here is a bit random, and it is also home to plenty of lively cafes and art galleries.

Wengen in Switzerland

Wonder how the world was before cars were invented? Wengen, a Switzerland’s village might just help you realize your dreams. Cars have been banned from this area for close to 100 years. Imagine seeing woods all around you, snow peaked mountains, log cabins and locals who have kept their Swiss culture undamaged.

Eze in France

France’s most attractive village is Eze. Seemingly frozen in time, Eze has managed to keep its old-world charm. It is the perfect melting pot of cultures because of its closeness to Nice, and today the village enjoys its rich heritage. The architecture here is so special that Walt Disney frequented this village for inspiration.

Bibury in England

Bibury was described by William Morris as the most beautiful village in England--known for its watercolor views. The 17th-century stone cottages and a still-working 1902 farm are some of the ancient village’s must-sees.

21. Which is not allowed to do for tourists in Wengen?

A. Traveling around by car. B. Viewing woods everywhere.

C. Leaning about Swiss culture. D. Appreciating snowy mountains.

22. Which village did Walt Disney often visit to get inspired?

A. Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia. B. Wengen in Switzerland.

C. Eze in France. D. Bibury in England.

23. What do the four villages have in common?

A. Each has modern architecture.

There’s physics to having your ducklings(小鸭)in a row.By paddling in an orderly line behind their mother, baby ducks can take a ride on the waves in her wake(尾流). Thatsaves theducklings’ energy, researchers report in the December 10thissue of theJournal of Fluid Mechanics.

Earlier measurements of duckling metabolism(新陈代谢)showed that the youngsters saved energy when swimming behind a leader, but the physics behind that savings wasn’t known. Using computer simulations(模拟)of waterfowl waves, Zhiming Yuan, an expertof the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, and his colleagues foundthat a duckling cruising in just the right spot behind its mother gets an assist.

When a duckling swims on its own, it kicks up waves in its wake, using up some energy that would otherwise send it movingahead. That wave dragresists the duckling’s move. But ducklings in the sweet spot experience 158 percent less wave drag than when swimming alone, the researchers calculated, meaning the duckling gets a push instead.

Like good partners, the ducklings share with one another. Each duckling in the line passes along waves to those behind, so allthebaby ducksget a free ride.

But to get the benefit, the youngsters need to keep up with their mom. If they fall out of position, swimming gets harder. That’s fair punishment for ducklings that dawdle(磨蹭).

28. What can we learn from paragraph 1?

A. Baby ducks learn physics from their mother duck.

B. Ducklings can swim more easily after mom orderly.

C. Ducklings can swim behind their mother without efforts.

D. The waves made by mother duck prevent ducklings’swim.

29. How did researchers conclude about energy-saving swimming?

A. By watching them carefully.

B. By measuring them correctly.

C. By studying certain examples.

D. By using computer technology.

30. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A. How researchers conducted the experiment.

B. Comparing two ways of baby ducks’swimming.

C. Why ducklings’swimming in a row saves energy.

D. Explaining the rules of baby ducks’movementin water.

31. What does the underlined part “the benefit”in paragraph5 refer to?

A. A free ride.

B. The hard swim.

C. A fair punishment.

D. The right position.

Two armchairs are in the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester. Denise, a blogger with past experience of homelessness, is sitting in one armchair, waiting for questions. A personsits opposite her, askingif it’s OK to give money to homeless people on the street. “It’s down to personal choice,”replies Denise. “Some worry it is enabling addictions, but it’s also providing someone with money to pay for shelter.”The dialogues are part of a performance artwork called Are you sitting comfortably?. The work was part of the opening International Arts and Homelessness Festival.

At the festival there were also the works of artists, many of whom had experience of homelessness like Lawrence. Lawrencenow has become an enthusiasticgardener, filling second-hand containers with soil and seeds. He has also written poetry to deal with life’s hardships. “My life started the day I stepped into this place,”he said. “Everyone has some genius, I think, and they help bring it out.”

The festival ended with “an immersive(沉浸式的) opera”, Man on Bench, written by and starring Tovey. His story covers a string of bad luck, including being diagnosed with cancer. Tovey was once homeless and desperate on a park bench when a guard started a conversation with him. The result was that Tovey moved into a night shelter and started taking photos and began winning photography competitions. That was five years ago. He now gives talks and runs events all over the country.

Man on Benchdoesn’t sugarcoat the realities of life on the street. “But we do want to change people’s minds,”he said. In a safe environment, focusing on drawing, people are more likely to get to know their problems. Then they will think about how to change. That’s why it’s so powerful. It gets people thinking.

32. What is Denise’s attitude towards giving money to the homeless?

A. Objective. B. Uncaring. C. Negative. D. Active.

33. How did Lawrence get through his suffering?

A. By joining in the festival.

B. By creating numbers of artworks.

C. By doing gardening and writing poems.

D. By solving poor people’s personal problems.

34. What can be inferred from “Man on Bench”according to the passage?

A. It hides the real life of the homeless.

B. It is probably based on Tovey’s real life.

C. It encourages the homeless to find shelter.

D. It is a piece of poetry composed by Tovey.

35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Art Reflecting Life.

B. Art Festival Is Going on.

C. Life of the Homelessness.

D. Art Changes the Life of the Homeless.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

People get used to saying “bless(保佑)you” or “gesundheit”when someone sneezes(打喷嚏). No one says anything when some coughsor blows their noses. 36 What do those phrases actually mean, anyway?

37 The ancient Romans would say “Jupiter preserve you!”, which means“good health to you” and the Greeks would wish each other “long life”. The phrase “God bless you” is due to Pope Gregory, who spoke it out in the sixth century.

Anotherterm “gesundheit” comes from Germany, meaning“health”. 38 It entered the English language in the 20th century, brought to the United States by German-speaking immigrants(移民).

Actually every country has its own way of wishing sneezers well. Arabic people say “Alhamdulillah!” which means “praise be to God”. Some countries have special sneezing responses for children. When a child sneezes in China, he/she will hear “bai sui”. 39

For the most part, the various sneeze responses originated(起源)from ancient superstitions(迷信). Some peoplebelieved a sneeze caused the soul to escape the body through the nose. Saying “bless you”would stop the devil from claiming the person’s soul. 40 Theyalso misunderstoodthat the heart temporarily stopped during a sneeze(actually it doesn’t), and that saying “bless you” was a way of welcoming the person back to life.

A. It means “may you live 100 years”.

B. What are the differences among them?

C. So why do sneezes get special treatment?

D.The idea is that a sneeze oftencomes ahead of illness.

E. Therefore, they would say “bless you”when someone sneezed.

F. Wishing one well after he sneezes probably originated centuries ago.

G. However, some believed evil spirits used the sneeze to enter a person’s body.

录音原文

(Text 1)

W: Hey, Andy. What are you doing here in the library?

M: Hey, Nicole. I’m just reading a book for the paper I am writing on healthy foods.

(Text 2)

M: Hey, Zoe, you look tired. Would you likealifthome?

W: No, thanks. I can go by bus. I need to go shopping on the way home. The supermarket is next to the bus stop.

(Text 3)

M: So, how do you remember what you need to do, Angela?

W: I write little notes — you know, things like “do homework”, “go swimming”, “clean the house” — everything. My refrigerator has little notes all over it.

(Text 4)

M: Hi. Can we pay, please?

W: Yeah, sure. That’s thirteen dollars, please. Six for the coffees and seven for the ice creams.

M: Ah, OK. There you are. Fifteen dollars. Keep the change.

(Text 5)

M: How do you know Anna?

W: We are neighbors. I live in the house next door. And you? How do you know her?

M: We are studying at the same university. We do the same course.

(Text 6)

W: Hi, John! Do you have any spare time this weekend?

M: No, I don’t, because I’ve got lots of homework to do over the weekend. Why are you asking?

W: My class is going to replant trees in the park that were damaged by the fire. Do you want to come along?

M: Oh! That sounds like fun. When are you going?

W: On Sunday. You can find me there any time between 10 am and 3 pm.

M: I might try to come if I finish my homework.

W: Great!

(Text 7)

W: Hello, Helen Smith.

M: Hi there, it’s Thomas. I’m just ringing to let you know what time I get in.

W: Hello? Hello? Are you there? You’re breaking up. Sorry, what was that?

M: Oh sorry, I’m on the train. I keep losing the signal so we might get cut off. Can you hear me now?

W: No, not really, it’s a really bad connection. Could you repeat that, please, and please could you speak up?

M: Right, OK … is that better? Well, my train gets in at 11:00, so I’ll see you at about half past. I’ll come straight to your office. Is that OK?

W: Yeah, yeah, that’s fine. OK, see you soon, then. Bye.

M: Bye.

(Text 8)

W: Hey, Tim. Where did you go for your vacation?

M: Hi, Linda! I went to Spain with my family.

W: How was it?

M: It was really hot, but we had a great time. We spent a week there. We went swimming and relaxed on a beautiful beach for the first five days, and then we spent two days in the forest. We saw different kinds of plants and animals. Oh, we saw a hurt bird, so we saved it!

W: Cool. It sounds like you had lots of fun. I want to go to Spain, too!

M: Yeah. It was cool. Oh, and I bought something for you. Here!

W: Wow, thanks! What is this?

M: Spain is famous for food, fashion, arts and sports. I know that you like sweet food, so I brought you a bottle of honey. I hope you’ll like it.

(Text 9)

W: Freedom Hotel. May I help you, sir?

M: Yes. This is John Edward. I have a reservation for tomorrow night.

W: Okay. Mr Edward. There is a room for three guests that was booked under your name.

M: Hold on. There must be some mistake. I booked a room for two people only.

W: Okay. Mr Edward, a room for two guests for tonight.

M: There’s another problem. It was for tomorrow night, not tonight.

W: Hum. I don’t think we have any rooms for tomorrow night.

M: Come on! You must have something. Anything.

W: Well, let me check my computer again. Ah! There has been a cancellation for a double room.

M: Great. I’ll take it.

W: But you’ll have to pay two hundred dollars for the night.

M: Miss. I should get a lower price for the inconvenience. I want to talk to the manager.

W: Wait Mr Edward. I think I can give you a free room the next time you visit us.

M: That will take ages.

(Text 10) (W)

Well, 1982 was a very important year for me. I was born that year! I was born in a small town in the north of Italy. My whole family lived there — my grandparents, my parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, everyone. It’s a very nice place with good weather. I really love it.

And then in 1995, everything changed. My father got a job in New York, so we went to live in the USA and I went to school there. I learned English quite quickly.

In 2003, I got my first job. I was a school teacher. I taught small kids, six to ten years old. It was great. Then in 2007, I met Niko —my husband. He’s German but we met in the USA. In 2010, I moved to Germany to be near him, and we got married the next year. And then I found a job. I teach English to business people, so here I am today.
