Mr. Smith was the maths teacher of Class 5, Senior Grade Three. He was also the head teacher of the elass. This was his 24th year of teaching career. He was very experienced in teaching and won the respect of his students and colleagues. He was very strict with his students, but treated them very kindly. Every day he had two lessons, during which time he would try his best to persuade some of his naughty students to study hard.

Jack was one of these naughty students. In fact, he was smarter than most of the other students in his class, which might make him a little bit proud of himself. He often skipped his lessons. To make matters worse, he often stayed up late, playing computer games without the teachers' knowledge. Therefore he often slept in most of the classes, which made Mr. Smith pretty annoyed.

In one of Mr. Smith's maths classes, all the students were attentive, except Jack, who was sleeping, with his head lying on his desk. The sight of this threw Mr. Smith into wild rage. He rushed towards Jack and seized his collar. All the other students didn't dare to say anything. They didn't know what would happen to Jack.

In Mr. Smith's office, Jack was severely scolded by Mr. Smith. Despite his breaking the rules of the school for many times. Mr. Smith still wanted to give him a chance. So he gently said to Jack. “I know you are a clever boy, but if you don't study hard, you will regret sooner or later." "But I passed all the exams!"Jack talked back. “But can you promiseyou can pass all the exams without working hard?" Mr. Smith tried to convince Jack of his belief that hard work led to success.

The following days witnessed no changes on Jack. He still played computer games and slept in class. Soon it was midterm. On Monday morning, Mr. Smith came into the classroom and announced. "There will be an important exam next Friday, kids."

Hearing the unexpected news, Jack was overwhelmed with nervousness, his heart racing wildly and palms sweating- as he had skipped many important lessons, which left him lacking in confidence himself. How he regretted his foolish behaviour before! Had he listened to Mr. Smith before., he wouldn't have been in this awkward situation. He felt like a cat on hot bricks, at a loss what to do next. How could he pass the upcoming exam? The following days witnessed especially hardworking Jack, who stayed up late, making up for his lessons instead of playing computer games.

Then came the day of the exam. Anxious and nervous Jack entered the classroom and found his seat, wearing a worried expression on his face. Soon test papers were handed out and Jack got the tepapers. Looking through the papers, Jack felt his heart beating faster, as he found most of the content were familiar to him. He sighed in great relief, previous nervousness and anxiety replaced by present calmness and confidence. He was firmly convinced that he was certain to pass the exam. It occurred to him that what Mr. Smith said was right and never again should he live his school life like before.
