Going to the post office is usually a weekly event for me. I rarely give it any thought other than to drive there, go inside, and drop off my letter or package. However, our world has changed and now I must give careful consideration to this journey, as my age and pre-existing condition put me into the “vulnerable” category. I am worried about getting infected with the pandemic. There are decisions that I need to make. Is this a package that must go out now? I conclude that it is. Is there anyone else who can take the package for me? I conclude there is not. So I have made two decisions already. Next, I must determine which of the two post offices closest to me would be the easiest one to accomplish my goal. I realize the larger one would be my best choice. Three decisions have been made!
On the drive over, I determined that I would look to see the number of cars in the parking lot before making my decision to go in. Upon arriving, I concluded that the car population was small enough, so I pulled into an empty space. My next thought was, “Perhaps I should wait for someone to come out and ask them to take my package in?” Then I realized, I would be making contact with a perfect stranger, and what was the difference between talking to that stranger and just going in and talking to the clerk? Next decision made, I walked inside. Therewere only two people and both were standing at the counters making their transactions(业务). I walked to the front of what was normally a very long line. I was standing alone, waiting formy turn. I was wondering whether this place had been disinfected(消毒)and was safe to stay here.
Shortly, I was called to the window. I could see that the postal clerk was aware of the fear in my eyes. She quietly stepped back from her station and signed to me to come forward. I stepped up to the counter and placed my package on the scale(秤).

She then signed to me to step back.
As I inserted my credit card, tears started to roll down my cheeks.
范文:
She then signed to me to step back. I moved away and she began the process of weighing it and determining the proper postage according to the postage standard. She told me the price and signed to me forward as she took a stepback. Again, I believed she saw the terror in my eyes and said,“One moment, Ma'am.” She leaned under the counter and picked up disinfectant. She thoroughly cleaned the credit card machine and the entire counter around it. She then stepped back and again signed to me forward.
As I inserted my credit card, tears started to rolldown my cheeks. I was so moved by the care with which she accomplished this usually very simple task. When I had completed the transaction, she again motioned me back as she stepped forward. She took the receipt, wiped it down, and laid it on the counter. Beside it, she placed a clean tissue as she could see my tears were still streaming down my cheeks. She again stepped away from the counter. I picked up the receipt and took a step back. In gratitude, I bowed to her. She bowed to me with equal respect.

It was 7:15 a.m. on Monday, and Frank,an engineer, was on his morning run along the East River. Suddenly. something caught his eyes-a large 60-year-old man balancing on the four-foot-highrailing(栏杆)that guarded the path from the water.Curious and confused, Frank stopped to get closer to the scene only to find the man took a step forward and dropped into the dark river below.
When Frank reached the railing, the man was struggling in the water, clearly unable to swim. He screamed desperately for help as the current pulled him away from the bank.
By now a crowd had gathered on land. People had called the police, but it was unclear when they'd get there. Without hesitation, dropping his phone and keys on land, Frank jumped in. Just as the old man was losing strength, Frank grabbed hold of him. Unexpectedly, the strong wind forced the water to tear them apart again.
Having seen what had happened, another two joggers made a quick response. They divedfrom where they stood into the river, and swam towards the pair, who were about 30 yards from the seawall. Immediately they caught up to the old man. The three stabilized him, with one supporting his back and the other two holding him up from either side.
However, the old man was unresponsive, but not unconscious. As the men made their way towards the seawall that stretched for blocks in each direction, Frank had an awful realization: With the water flowing a good eight feet below the lip of the wall and no ladder or dock in sight, there was no way out of the river.
“A rescue boat is on itsway," someone yelled to them. The old man, who was six feet two and weighed around 260 pounds, was deadweight in hisrescuers' arms, which meant they could only use their legs to save themselves. They were almost out of energy at that point.

Then appeared a rescue boat with a pole attached to it.
The old man was rushed to hospital.
范文:
Then appeared a rescue boat with a pole attached to it. Frank supported the back of the old man whom the other two pushed upward the boat with great efforts. At the same time, someone on the boat pulled the old man up, making it in the end. Then, the three in the water grasped the pole on the boat, with which they climbed aboard, to safety. The three men sat on the boat, looking pale and exhausted, out of breath. Within ten minutes, the group was back on land.
The old man was rushed to hospital. Luckily, the details on his condition proved there was nothing wrongwith him and he recovered in a short time.“Thank you for saving my life," he said, showing his sincere gratitudeto Frank and the two men, who left the hospital in relief after ensuring the old man was safe. Frank returned towork, obviously late. “I was a bit late but I had a good excuse. It is worth enough,"he thought.

It was one of those sunny mornings when merely breathing seemed to be an event worth celebrating. I was in a particularly good mood as my mother had just given me RM400(马来西亚币)for my daily expenses during the week that she would be away with my father in China to visit her sick grandaunt. I was wondering if I survived on bread and butter the whole week, I would have RM300 to buy the latest computer games! It was certainly a great way to begin the day.
As I neared the classroom, I heard a loud noise coming from it and quickly rushed in. My classmates were gathered around Tommy's table as he searched through some personal items. Tommy had always been a popular boy in class. Not only was he bright and well-mannered, but he also came from a wealthy family that provided him with all he could ask for.
My classmates told me that Tommy had lost the money that he had brought as a donation to the welfare home that we were supposed to visit that afternoon. Understanding the situation, I suggested that we organize a search around the classroom and inform the class teacher as soon as possible. In no time, Miss Soh rushed to the classroom. She decided to run a search through everyone's bag. We quickly stood by our tables and emptied the contents of our bags onto the table. When it came to my turn, I took out all my possessions. As Miss Soh took out the RM400 from my wallet, the class fell into a shock.
Up till then, I had no idea that the amount lost was exactly RM400. Everyone stared at me in horror. Miss Soh was pleased that her efforts had borne fruit. In a loud voice, she demanded to knowwhere the money had come from. I told her the truth, but she appeared not to have heard anything that I had said. She claimed loudly that I was the thief, because my family was poor and could not possibly afford to give me RM400.

Her cruel words cut me deeply.
A week later, when taking Miss Soh's class,Tommy suddenly found the neatly folded RM400slip out of his notebook.
范文:
Her cruel words cut me deeply. Never before in my life had I been so overwhelmed with such grievance and helplessness that I stood there motionless. All my classmates were shaking their heads at me, totally convinced of the teacher's claims. Driven by a strong inner voice of protesting my innocence, I made the last attempt, declaring firmly, “I am not the thief!" Unsurprisingly, it didn't work: Feeling dizzy on the spot, I grabbed my bag, dashed out of the classroom and headed home with tears in my eyes. The entire week was spent in a state of confusion. I kept to myself a lot, choosing not to talk to anyone.
A week later, when taking Miss Soh's class, Tommy suddenly found the neatly folded RM400 slip out of his notebook. Seeing the money, he froze in puzzlement. He picked it up immediately, lost in thought. After a while, Tommy put up his hand, signaling to say something urgent. Miss Soh stepped off the platform and came up to Tommy. “What's the matter, Tommy?” she asked with concern. “Miss Soh, here is my RM400,” he murmured. On hearing that, all my classmates were shocked, exploding into whispers. I, who was wronged by the teacher, sat still in the chair, anticipating something. Then both Miss Soh and Tommy approached me to say “SORRY” to me. It was their sincere apology and Miss Soh's tender embrace that erased the shadow enveloping me all those days.

18-year-old Paul often visited his 80-year-old grandma Edith. He'd start his day early and leave for his grandma's house first in the morning.
Because his family was poor, Paul walked nearly six miles daily to see Edith, bringing her breakfast and chatting with her. Edith lived alone and didn’t want to move out of her beloved house to live with Paul's family.
She was touched by Paul’s care for her. And she decided she'd pass her house and heirloom(传家宝) jewelry down to him when she died.
Sixty-year-old Stephen was Edith’s neighbour. Whenever he saw Paul came, he'd sit silently near his motorbike in his yard and listen to them chatting joyfully. It often reminded him of his only grandchild who was lost in an accident with his parents on his birthday. After that, Stephen lived alone. He felt an unusual affection for Paul.
One day, on his way to Edith’s house Paul saw Stephen struggling to move his motorbike. He rushed to help him.“Thank you, son.” Stephen said. “Do you live nearby? I often see you here."
After Paul explained, Stephen was shocked that Paul would walk so far daily. Then Stephen took out the keys to the motorbike which he had planned to give to his grandchild as a birthday gift. “Here! I was planning to sell it. Now, I decide to give it to you for free,” Stephen said. Paul refused, but he insisted.
Paul gratefully took the keys and further chatted with Stephen. He learned Stephen lived a poor life and made a living by driving tourists around using his own car. The car was old. He guessed it would be useless in a year or two.
After chatting, Paul went to visit his grandmother. When he left, he waved at Stephen as he rode past his house. The following day, Paul reached Edith's house earlier by motorbike. He was shocked when finding his grandma lying on the floor in a dead faint. He immediately called an ambulance.

Days later, Paul bought Stephen a new car by selling the jewelry from his late grandma.
范文:
“If you had arrived five ninutes late, you could have lost her," the doctor told Paul. It made Paul so grateful to Stephen for his motorbike. Soon, Edith recovered. Paul kept visiting her and occasionally metStephen. Two years later, old Edith died peacefully. And she indeed left her house and jewelry to Paul. When Paul cleared her house, he visited Stephen. He felt sad to learn Stephen's car was no longer working and that he couldn't make ends meet. Paul thought that he must do something to help Stephen.
Days later, Paul bought Stephen a new car by selling the jewelry from his late grandma. When seeing a new car standing outside his house, Stephen froze in shock. He didn’t expect Paul would be so nice to him. Paul approached him and said, “Your help once saved my grandma. I'm sure she's happy, watching us from above now!”Tears welled up in Stephen's eyes. Paul handed him the keys to the new car and hugged him. Paul didn't sell the house. He often visited the place and was happy to see Stephen back on his feet again.

I live with my husband,Tyrone, in San Luis Obispo,California, about three miles from the beach. Every few years, the humpback whales come into the bay for a few days while migrating. November 2020 was one of those times, so we took out our yellow double kayak(皮艇) to watch the wildlife. We paddled(用桨划船) out the sea and saw seals, dolphins, and about 20 whales feeding on silverfish. We were in amazement watching these graceful giant creatureseach one about 50 feet longspray through their blowholes.
At the time, my friend Liz was staying with us.The next day,I asked her if she wanted to go out on the water to see them. With no such experience, she refused.“There's nothing to worry about,”I assured her.“The boat is stable, and we can turn back anytime.”Finallyshe agreed to join me.I didn't want her to miss thisgreat experience and regret it later.
At 8:30 the following morning when we got out on the water, there were already about 15 other kayakers and surfers in the bay. After a half-hour, we had our first whale sighting: two humpbacks swimming toward us.How amazing to be that close to a creature that sizeI thought. as the whales dipped under the waterline.
When the whales went down, they left what looked like oil on the water.I figured if we paddled toward that spot, we'd be safe from the whales, since they’d just left.We followed them at a distanceor what I thought was a distance. Suddenly,a tightly packed group of silverfish started jumping out of the water into our kayak.Oh no!We were being attacked

What should have been a joyful moment was actually terrifying
Meanwhile a kayaker paddled over.
范文:
What should have been a joyful moment was actually terrifving. In a split of second, our kayak was lifted out of the water about six feet by the massive jaws. Liz and I slipped out of the kayak into the whale's mouth. My body was engulfed except for my right arm and paddle. So was Liz. As the whale’s mouth closed Liz thrust her arm up to block it from crushing her. Feeling the creature begin to dive, I had to do everything possible to stop it. Suddenly, the paddle beside caught my eyes. Without hesitation, I seized the paddle, raised it to keep its mouth open. After a deep breath, I caught Liz by the arm and jumped out into the water.
Meanwhile, a kayaker paddled over. Upon getting close to us, he immediately stretched out his paddle pulled us out of water and into his kayak, heading to the beach. It was until that moment that I recovered from the terror. Never was I so much more aware of the power of nature and the ocean than I was before. Liz was shaken up, likening the horrific experience to a near-death one, and she said her whale-watching days were over. But even she had to laugh when she got home that afternoon and realized she'd brought back a souvenir. When she pulled off her shirt, six silverfish flopped out.

My first year of high school felt awkward. It felt strange starting over as a freshman. The school was twice as big as my old schooland to make matters worse, my closest friends were sent to a different high school. I felt very isolated.
I missed my old teachers so much that I went back and visit them. They encouraged me to get involved in school activities so that I could meet new people. I understood the psychology in what they were saying, but I took some comfort in it nevertheless.
One Sunday afternoon not long after I had started high schoolI was sitting at home at our dining-room table doing homework. It was a cold and windy fall day, and we had a fire going in our fireplace. Suddenly, I smelled something strange, and then I noticed it: smoke pouring in through the seams of the ceiling. The smoke began to fill the room so quickly that we could barely see. Feeling our way to the front door, we all ran out into the front yard. By the time we made our way outside, the whole roof was swallowed up in flames and it was spreading quickly…
Five hours later, the fire was finally put out by the firemen. Our house was almost completely burned down. Then all at once it hit me -the new school, the fire-I broke down in tears and cried and cried. I was suffering loss, big time.
The next day, Monday, I went to school. The clothes I was wearing looked weird, I had no books or homeworkand , my backpack was gone.
It always seems that bad news spreads quickly, and in my case, it was no different. Everyone in high schoo, lincluding the teachers, was aware of my difficult situation. I was embarrassed as if, somehow, I were responsible.

The next day at school, people were acting even more strange than usual.
A month later,I was at my house watching them rebuild it.
范文:
The next day at school, people were acting even more strange than usual. I was getting ready for gym class. People were around me asking me to hurry up. It almost seemed that they were trying to shove me into the gym-then I saw why. There was a big table set up with all kinds of " stuff" on it, just for me.They had taken up a collection and bought me school supplies, notebooks, all kinds of different clothes-jeans, tops, sweat-suits. It was like Christmas. I was overcome by emotion. Their genuine concern really touched me and I made friends that day.
A month later, I was at my house watching them rebuild it. But this time it was different- I wasn’t alone. I was with two of my new friends from school. As we were planning my new bedroom all the overwhelming feelings of loss and tragedy, seemed to diminish. It took a fire for me to stop focusing on my feelings of insecurity and open up to all the wonderful people around me. When I was watching my house being rebuilt, I realized my life was doing the same thing.
