第二部分阅读(共两节,满分50分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

A

The Worlds' Best Bookshops

There's nothing like being surrounded by books, wherever you are. Here are the finest oases of literature that travellers can bring you.

Daikanyama T-site︱Tokyo

It is well worth visiting even if just to admire the building's beautiful, criss-crossed architecture. Once you've had your fill of roaming three floors' worth of bookshelves, there's the bar, the coffee shop, or even the video rental space to give you more reason to stay just that little bit longer. Grab a book, order a beer and dive into its pages. I could have stayed hours here.

City Lights︱San Francisco

The three-storey establishment publishes and sells titles in poetry, fiction, translation, politics, history and the arts. It hosts events and readings, and runs a non-profit of the same name that aims to promote diversity of voices and ideas in literature. It's opposite Vesuvio, a bar frequented by Kerouac and other Beat-generation writers and artists.

Shakespeare and Company︱Paris

I made a special trip to the Left Bank for this one when I was in Paris. It has two floors packed with English-language texts, and I was particularly struck by any spare wall space devoted to notes from visitors - heartfelt messages to a loved one, dedications to the shop itself, or a quote from a favourite author or philosopher.

Hutatma Chowk︱Mumbai

A few years ago I visited India, investigating Rudyard Kipling's connections with the country. I spotted a cheap copy of The Jungle Book on one of the tarp-covered book stalls at Hutatma Chowk (Martyrs' Square). The booksellers here are like amateur librarians, able to lay their hands on almost any title you ask for. To me, those well-thumbed(翻旧了的) books spoke volumes about the changes of Mumbai's readers in the 150 years since the city gave us Kipling.

1.In which bookshop can you buy a drink while visiting?
A.Daikanyama T-site B.City Lights
C.Shakespeare and CompanyD.Hutatma Chowk

A.People can meet Rudyard Kipling there.

B.They sell the cheapest books in the world.

C.The book owners are amateur librarians.

D.The sellers are familiar with the books.

3.What do the four bookstores have in common?
A.They are beautifully designed.
B.They are three-storey buildings.
C.They offer book lovers good experience.
D.They are frequently visited by great writers.

Gautam Shah had spent 20 years working in IT—and his whole life caring about nature. He saw advances in conservation that got mentioned only in science journals, “but the story lines within that data are amazing; they’re fascinating,” Shah says. ‘They’re absolutely things that can engage an audience. ”

Eager to use his techie skills for wildlife conservation, Shah—a National Geographic explorer—founded a game company called Internet of Elephants in 2016. The Kenya-based start-up designs digital experiences to tell real conservation stories based on real data. One example: Wildeverse, an improved reality mobile app like Pokemon Go, launched in April 2020. In the game, players can “track” apes by collecting environmental samples such as fruit and animal waste. Rather than putting lots of high-tech tricks in a game, Shah says, the company prioritizes (优先) telling an interesting, true story through whatever technology is best suited to it.

Shah believes that gaming has a unique ability to connect audiences with wildlife in a deep, personal way that will show much concern and advocacy. His goal is for Internet of Elephants to reach more than 50 million people by 2027.

Hopefully, he says, “we can create an entire industry where creating games and these types of digital experiences about wildlife conservation becomes as common things as creating a wildlife documentary. ”

4. We can learn from paragraph 1 that Gautam Shah ________.

A. has got a creative idea of doing something interesting

B. has found some amazing data in science journals

C. thought science journals should be amazing

D. had devoted his life to IT industry

5. Why did Gautam Shah found the game company?

A. To improve reality mobile apps.

B. To win more than 500 million online players.

C. To collect money for a wildlife conservation project.

D. To use digital experiences to promote wildlife protection.

6. What can the players do through the app Wildeverse?

A. Play high-tech tricks in the game.

B. Tell interesting, true stories about animals.

C. Find apes by following their movements.

D. Have “conversations” with many animals like apes.

7. Which of the following words can best describe Gautam Shah?

A. Considerate and ambitious. B. Creative and responsible.

C. Caring and tolerant D. Curious and generous.

C

The health benefits of staying active are already well-known. It can help you manage weight keep blood sugar levels down and reduce risk factors for heart disease.

Now, a new study suggests that regularly playing sports, especially badminton or tennis, is not only healthy but also reduces your risk of death, at any age, by approximately 50%. This is a big scale population study to explore the health benefits of sports in terms of death rate. The study evaluated responses from 80, 306 adults aged 30 and above in England and Scotland, who were surveyed about their health, lifestyle and exercise patterns.

After adjusting factors such as age, sex, weight, smoking habits, alcohol use, education and other forms of exercise besides the named sports, the researchers compared the risk of death among people who took part in a sport to those who didn’t. The percentage of reduced risk of death was found to be: 47% for racket(球拍)sports, 28% for swimming and 15% for cycling.

In addition to this, the study didn’t find any significant reduction in the risk for sports like running and football. The findings also exposed that over 44% of the participants met the guidelines for the recommended exercise levels to stay fit and healthy, which amounts to 150 minutes of moderate physical activity in a week.

Does this mean you stop running or playing football and switch to tennis instead? Every kind of sport and physical activity has different physical, social and mental benefits attached to it. The apparent lack of benefits of running and football could result from several variables that were not taken into account.

Being active helps you feel happier and live longer. So, the most important step is to take part in any kind of sport that you are likely to enjoy and follow in the long term.

8. How is the study conducted?

A. By doing comparative experiments. B. By analyzing previous data.

C. By evaluating survey information. D. By tracking participants for a long time.

9. What does the underlined part “the named sports” refer to?

A. Ball sports. B. Racket sports.

C. Individual sports. D. Traditional sports.

10. What can we infer from paragraph 5?

A. Few people will play football. B. Tennis will become more popular.

C. The result of this study is wrong. D. The study needs to be further improved.

11. What does the author advise people to do?

A. Stick to any sport that you like. B. Play badminton and tennis only.

C. Stop running and playing football. D. Do any sport according to guidelines.

D

Last week, Education Secretary Arne Duncan declared a war on paper textbooks. “Over the next few years," he said in a speech at the National Press Club, “textbooks should be abandoned." In their place would come a variety of digital-learning technologies, like e-readers and multi-media websites.

Such technologies certainly have their place. But Secretary Duncan is threatening to light a fire to a tried-and-true technology that has been the foundation for one of the great educational systems on the planet. And while e-readers and multi-media may seem appealing, the idea of replacing an effective learning platform with a widely hyped (炒作) but still unproven one is extremely dangerous,

An expert on reading, Maryanne Wolf, has recently begun studying the effects of digital reading on learning, and s0 far the results are mixed. She worries that Internet reading, in particular, could be such a source of distractions for the student that they may cancel out most other potential benefits of a web-linked, e-leaning environment, and while it's true that the high-tech industry has sponsored considerable amounts of research on the potential benefits of Web-based learning, not enough time has passed for longitudinal (纵向的) studies to demonstrate the full effects.

In addition, digital-reading advocates claim that lightweight e-books benefit students' backs and save schools money. But the rolling backpack seems to have solved the weight problem, and the astonishing costs to equip every student with an e reader, provide technical support and pay for regular software updates promise to make the e-textbook a very pricey choice.

As both a teacher who uses paper textbooks and a student of urban history, I can't help but wonder what parallels exist between my own field and this sudden, wholesale abandonment of the technology of paper.

12. What does the underlined part “a tried-and-true technology" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. Foundation B. Paper

C. E-booksD. Platform

13. What is the drawback of textbooks according to the passage?

A. Its price. B. Its efficiency.

C. Its content.D. Its weight.

14. What worries Maryanne Wolf is that__________

A. E-readers and multimedia websites are learning methods that are proved effective.

B. the results of digital reading effects are understandable

C. digital reading can't provide potential benefits for users

D. students may not focus on leaning by digital reading

15. What is the author's attitude towards digital-learning?

A. Objective. B. Supportive.

C. Positive. D. Disapproving.

The Dog Who Saved Our Family

We met Max at the pickup area of Alaska Airlines five years ago. He was a standard poodle(狮子狗)born on Valentine’s Day in 2017, and came to us in a small blue box. We had adopted him from an out-of-state raiser who posted the news on the social network. Our only request was that he have a calm behavior, able to bear the pushing and hugging of our eight-year-old daughter and six-year-old son.

We were a sweet little family:me,my husband, and our children, Sophie and Jake. But for years I’d felt as if we wouldn’t really be complete until we had a dog. Also, my husband worked in a business company and had to travel some 200 days a year for his job, and I knew I’d feel safer with a large animal sleeping by the door.

When we opened the box, the last piece of our puzzle fell into place. With his black hair and intelligent eyes,Max was beautiful. He was so small that he fit into the palm of my hand, his big paws lapping over the sides. He was also a little bit scared. As I pulled him close,I felt his heart pound and wondered if we’d done the right thing, taking him from his mother. But it was too late. Sophie and Jake were already fighting over who would hold him next and who should have the right to take a bath for him.

Over the following months, we spent endless hours watching Max play with his Kong toy or roll around the living room floor. Like most poodles, he was smart. He mastered house-training quickly and never chewed on our furniture or shoes. He considered himself one of us.

Please let me know if you need further information.

Yours,

Li Hua

第二节:读后续写(满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:

One night we were sleeping in the bed room when I heard some strange noise. I thought it was Max running and hitting something, so I kept lying in the bed and made an attempt to fall asleep again. However, the noise became louder and louder, which had already annoyed me. Swiftly I got up from my bed. I opened the door and found Max was running around the living room, trying to let all the things fall down. These abnormal behaviors really confused me while it also made me a little afraid.

At that time,Max ran towards me. He firmly grabbed my trousers and motioned me to the kitchen. As I approached the kitchen, I could obviously smell a strong burning scent and instantly knew what had happened. When I saw the fierce fire in the kitchen, I dashed into my children’s room like an arrow, waking them up at my maximum voice. Rushing out of the house together, I called 911 and asked our neighbors for help at the same time. Fortunately both my family and my house were saved. Thanks to our smart Max, we did escape from death.

【解析】

2.续写线索:想养狗——收养Max——调教Max——Max成为家中的一员——听到Max制造的动静——去查看——Max让我发现火灾——救了一家人。
