The Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games closed on February 20. You must be impressed by this grand gathering and raised great interest in winter sports. In fact, the Olympics might not be successfully held without the “Beijing 2022 snow service team” guided by Qin Dahe.

Beijing, located in a continental monsoon climate zone, is likely to suffer extreme weather during February, which made the protection of snow quality on the track quite important during the Games. However, there were few pieces of research on snow storage in China and abroad. There was a long way to go but Beijing 2022 was coming.

Facing all these difficulties, Dr. Qin took on this task and set up the snow service team in 2017. They used different materials to cover snow and compared the snow amount and snow quality changes under different materials to determine the best plan to prevent the risk of snow use caused by rising temperatures. Wang Xing, one of the team members said, “I cannot remember exactly how many days I spent working in the minus 20℃ weather.”

With great effort, this team made it. They not only reserved the most important technologies but also trained the first graduate students in the snow-related fields. These talents will contribute their power to China’s ice-snow industry development.

Back to Dr. Qin, born in 1947 in Gansu Province, he is a geographer and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He graduated from the Faculty of Geography of Lanzhou University in 1970. Although he didn’t have the opportunity for further study in the 1970s he never gave up his pursuit of science and received his doctor’s degree in 1992.

He was also the first Chinese person to reach the South Pole on foot in 1989 with an international scientific research expedition. To prepare for his adventure, he even had ten teeth pulled out just to avoid any possible problems. In 1997 and again in 2000, he went to Mount Qomolangma to do scientific research though he nearly died there in 1993.

As a true hero, he made a valuable contribution to the research of ice and snow in China. Many thanks to him! If you want to know more about him, search the Internet!
