Sixty-six-year-oldAtsuko Oyama shares a goal held by many people a half-century younger. Shewants to get 100 kills in the first- person shooter videogame “ApexLegends".
True, she's a littlerusty (生疏的), having last foughtagainst digital enemies in a “Space Invaders" shooting game sometime inthe latter part of the 20th century. But after joining Japan's first senioresports team in September, Ms. Oyama achieved 10 kills in a month and feels herenthusiasm growing. “Watching others play, I thought I couldn't do it,” saidthe retired receptionist. “But I didn't like to be left behind, so I decided tocome here at least twice, and now I am into it.”
Esports promoters whohave seen Japan fall behind powerhouses in videogame competitions think the seniormarket might be the way to catch up. And if the over-65 set feels a little moreenergized after shooting a few rival enemies, so much the better.
Japan is the world'soldest nation, but its efforts to boost the size of its younger population havebeen mostly unsuccessful. It is, however, at the forefront of initiatives tokeep old people thinking younger.
Ms. Oyama, whose playername is Mama, tried out for the team known as the Matagi Snipers after herdaughter saw an ad recruiting players. The Matagi Snipers, named for a traditionalgroup of bear hunters in northern Japan, have been practicing since Septemberat their home base in northern Akita county. With an average age of 68, the14-person team hopes eventually to compete in professional tournaments infirst-person shooter titles such as “Apex Legends" and “Fortnite”.
Coach“Lemon”motivateshis team by telling them age is an advantage. He thought, there is a hugedifference in social experience between people who have lived only 20 yearsversus 60 years. While younger players tend to be more violent, older playerscan communicate better and lean on teamwork.
24.Which of the following best describes Atsuko Oyama?
A. Ambitious andcreative. B. Diligent and enthusiastic. C.Intelligent and responsible. D.Independent and cooperative.

Waking up dizzy neverfeels right. And how we wake up can not only affect our mood and the day's outlook, but also our cognition(认知) and mentalperformance.
In some instances, dizzinessafter waking has the potential to be dangerous several hours later, by reducingour performance in pivotal decision-making such as in health settings, emergencyresponses, security, or while driving. This cognitive state of reducedalertness is referred to as “sleep inertia”. It's a growing concern as it canhave serious consequences while performing high- risk tasks, including driving.
But when it comes tochoosing an alarm, what exactly is the best choice? A growing body of evidencesuggests different alarm sounds can positively influence human performanceafter waking.
Our systematic reviewpublished in 2020 showed temporal frequencies around 500 Hz are better at arousingyoung children than 2000+Hz varieties. Voice notifications such as a person yelling“wake up!" work better than higher frequencies. However, they are not aseffective as 500 Hz tonal beeping(哔哔声)alarms- similar to those preinstalled in most mobile phones.
Our research alsoexplores how qualities of music, and specifically melody(旋律), play a role in encouraging alertwakefulness.
We found that the way inwhich people interpret their alarms “tunefulness" also reflects how dizzythey feel after waking. Here, people who use alarms that carry a tune they willreadily sing along to will experience less dizziness than those with a standard“beeping” alarm.
With this in mind, wedeveloped a custom rhythmic melody that led to significantly better performanceupon and after waking, when compared to standard beeping alarms.
Other studies have alsofound popular music, which can be interpreted as being melodic, is good tocounteract sleep inertia after a short nap, and even more yet if it is musicthe listener personally enjoys.
28.What does the underlined word “pivotal" mean in the second paragraph?
A. Crucial. B. Severe. C. Cautious. D. Sensible.
29.According to the passage, a perfect alarm must sound something like this:
A. it is fast and loud B. it is a standardbeeping alarm
C. it has a melody youcan easily sing to D. it has adominant frequency around 2000+HZ
30.How does the author develop the passage?
A. By listing figures. B. By presenting studies. C. By making a comparison. D. By giving a definition.
31.What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Studies on settingwake-up sound B. Reasons forchoosing a best alarm
C. Secret to the perfectwake-up sound D. Advice on improvingcognition performance.

The National Academiesof Science (NAS) has released a new report looking at more than 800 scientificstudies about the effects of electronic cigarettes on users' health.
The report concludes arange of public health impacts of e- cigarettes. However, it does not concludewhether the overall impact is either positive or negative. The report paysspecial attention to the impact of e-cigarettes on young adults, who use themat higher rates than adults do. Experienced adult users of e-cigarettes can getjust as much nicotine as from regular cigarettes. Nicotine is the addictivedrug in tobacco. Most e-cigarettes contain and release a variety of substancesin addition to nicotine that could be toxic (有毒的).There is generally far less exposure to these other toxic substances frome-cigarettes than from regular cigarettes.
Using e-cigarettes canbe addictive and the severity of an addiction to e-cigarettes likely depends onmany factors, including the device, the e-liquid used in the device, and howthe user operates. The NAS report found a strong association between youthusing e-cigarettes and their likelihood of trying conventional cigarettes.Nicotine is highly addictive at any age, but is especially dangerous for youth. The US Surgeon General has criticized e-cigarette marketers for usingstrategies that target young people. Many flavors appear to be aimed atteenagers, with some popular names such as Cherry Crush and Cotton Candy. Thusyoung people buy e-cigarettes more than any other tobacco product.
American Cancer Societyexperts (ACS) acknowledge NAS report, including: an association between the useof e-cigarettes by youth and the eventual use of regular cigarettes; anevidence that e-cigarettes are not harmless, but are likely to be much lessharmful than regular cigarettes and unknown risks of long-term use ofe-cigarettes. These are similar to findings conducted by ACS researchers. Theyconclude that the overall health effects of electronic cigarettes are complex, and there is not yet agreement among the scientific community.
The US Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) is using its full authority to regulate all tobaccoproducts. It announced in 2016 that it would begin regulating e-cigarettes. Butit later delayed until 2022 the deadline for tobacco companies to apply forapproval.
32.What do we learn about the new report from NAS?
A. It focuses on theimpact of e-cigarettes on adults.
B. It states thecomprehensive effects of e-cigarettes.
C. It is based on 800scientific studies on e-cigarettes.
D. It is aimed toconvince people not to use e-cigarettes.
33.What does Paragraph 3 mainly intend to tell us?
A. How e-cigarettesimpact youth. B. What the NASreport is about youth.
C. What danger thenicotine is to youth. D. How youthbecome attracted by e-cigarettes.
34.What's the opinion shared by ACS and NAS?
A. E-cigarettes probablydo no harm to health.
B. E-cigarettes have aneverlasting impact on health.
C. E-cigarettes causethe same impact as regular cigarettes.
D. E-cigarettes probablymake youth become regular smokers.
35.What can be said about the future of e-cigarettes in the US?

It was just the three ofus---my parents and me. I always felt it a pity that I would never have achance to know what grandparents' “spoiling” love would be like.
My dad is a truckdriver, and when I was lttle, he was gone most of the time, delivering wire andother supplies around the Midwest. My mom is a devoted teacher, always busy switchingbetween looking after her only child and her many students.
We lived in a smallhouse in Brighton, Colorado, in a neighborhood of 1970s old houses. We movedthere on my third birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Arlene handing me strawberriesfrom her garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. She and her husband,Bill, lived next door.
Arlene spent a lot oftime working in the garden, and I was always talking to her from our yard. Ithink what drew me to Arlene and Bill is that they never got tired of listeningto me. I also think Arlene saw a lot of herself in me- we were both lonely,anxious-- and that may be why she always took the time to listen to me. Billtoo. It was a wonderful connection.
One day, my parentsasked Bill and Arlene whether they' d watch me while they went out. This workedwell for everyone, so it became a somewhat frequent occurrence. Arlene and Billdidn't have kids. They had a spare room in their house, which became “my"room. I had boxes of toys and books in that room. Arlene and I would do craftstogether. Bill taught me how to ride a bike and later how to fly a kite. It washis company that made father's constant absence not so unbearable.
When I was about five, Ihad an idea. My parents were watching TV when I spat it out, “what if I adoptedBill and Arlene as my grandparents?”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My parents said I couldask them tomorrow.

第二节: (满分25分)
My parents said I couldask them tomorrow. The next day, heart pounding in my chest, I knocked on Billand Arlene's door, sat down in their living room and stammered out my question tentatively,“Will you guys care to be my grandparents?" At these words, they werepetrified with surprise and the room fell into an awkward silence. “Maybe theyare not so fond of me as I thought." I murmured to myself, doubts crowdingin on me. I was about to sneak out when my friends reached out their arms andembraced me tightly. “Of course!” they responded enthusiastically, tears of joybrimming in their eyes.
From the day I adoptedthem, I called Bill and Arlene Grandpa and Grandma. They even went to greatlengths to print out an adoption certificate, and it hung on their living roomwall proudly. Over the years, my dear grandparents supported me in all mygloomy days, encouraged me to pursue dreams regardless of numerous obstacles, and imparted their invaluable wisdom to me selflessly. I could find no words toexpress how grateful and fortunate I felt for their presence in my life. However, it was when they told me in their last days that how much joy andcomfort I had brought into their otherwise tedious life that I truly became theluckiest grandson in the world.

M: In Spain, childrenand their families are riding bikes to school together in large groups. The programis called “bicibus” or bike bus.
⑧This fall, children in the Eixamplearea of Barcelona have a new way to get to school on Fridays- -they ride theirbikes. In September, a group of five children began biking to school with theirparents on Fridays. Soon the group grew to 150 or more. Most kids ride theirbikes, but others ride scooters or use skates. Instead of riding in bike lanes oron sidewalks, the bicibus takes up the entire street. With music playing andbike bells ringing, the bicibus feels like a party. Being able to ride with abunch of kids is a big part of the fun. 19Nine-year-old Maria Pitarch says,"The best part of the bicibus is that we ride along and pick up ourfriends and we ride together.” 2Parents are hoping that the bicibus will helpchange ideas about how people can get around in the city. They want the city tocreate wider, kid-friendly bike lanes that are separate from car traffic. Theypoint out that the bicibis also helps cut down on pollution. Recently, picturesand videos of the Eixample bicibus got a lot of attention when they were postedon the social media. Many people pointed out what a simple idea it is, and howeasy itis to get started.
