Alex Scheffler is an award winning illustrator (插图画家),best known for his work on children's books. Here he talks about books that changed his life.
Petzi auf der Robinson Insel by Carla Hansen, illustrated by Vilh Hansen
This is one of a series of books that I loved as a child growing up in Hamburg.I seem to remember getting them sometimes after unpleasant visits to the dentist! The Petzi books described the adventures of a little bear, who was fond of pancakes, and his exploration of the world together with his friends,a penguin and a seal.
I think they may have influenced my way of seeing the world as I still prefer to draw animals with clothes on now !
I Am Papa Snap and These Are My Favorite No Such Stories written and illustrated by Tomi Ungerer
When I was a teenager,I discovered cartoonists and illustrators like Edward Gorey,Sempe,Bosc and others, but most of all I loved the art of Tomi Ungerer,a French artist with strong political views – anti-war,anti-racist,anti-nationalist.Ungerer was a passionate European and spoke three languages:none of them perfect,he claimed, but then he could draw a universally understood means of expression!I think he was probably the strongest influence on my own work as an illustrator.
Cats,Dogs,Men,Women,Ninnies & Clowns:The Lost Art of William Steig by Jeanne Steig
When I discovered the work of William Steig,I was already working as an illustrator. He worked as a cartoonist for the New Yorker all his life and came to writing and illustrating children's books when he was in his sixties.I love his picture books:Solomon the Rusty Nail,Sylvester and the Magic Pebble,Gorky Rises,Brave Irene — more dressed animals!
This book, however,is slightly different as it was published after his death and contains about 400 unpublished drawings.I was very happy when I discovered it in a second hand bookshop on Charing Cross Road.

Read Across America Day Read Across America (RAA) is a day held annually on March 2nd that encourages children in every community to read and also encourages parents and teachers to celebrate the joy of reading. It's a holiday that has been celebrated since 1998 and falls on the same day as children's book author Dr.Seuss' birthday.
This holiday dates back to May of 1997.This is when a small group of people at the National Education Association (NEA) came up with the idea to create a day of the year that celebrates reading among children. They reasoned that since many school football programs could get children engaged in the sport through pep rallies (鼓舞士气的集会),then why couldn't the same thing be done for reading? So they decided to turn to a Read Across America program that was officially launched on March 2,1998,and ever since it has continued to grow in size.Today, more than 50 national nonprofit and association sponsors (资助者) and more than 3.3 million NEA members support the effort every year.
This holiday is celebrated in numerous ways. All over the country, libraries, schools and community centers hold special Read Across America events that promote reading in their communities.Teachers also develop special events on this day to encourage their students to read. The NEA also sponsors reading round tables and has an online store that allows people to buy everything they need for their RAA celebrations. This includes Dr.Seuss hats,RAA bookmarks, special RAA flash drives and even RAA mugs.

Beethoven, one of the world's most-loved composers,is famous for his nine symphonies (交响乐).Before he died,he began a new symphony, but never finished it.Computer scientists and musicians have now used artificial intelligence to finish his 10th Symphony.
Beethoven wrote many famous pieces of music, but he's probably best known for his nine symphonies.A symphony is a long, grand piece of classical music, usually divided into four parts. The four parts are often linked by "themes" — repeated musical ideas that tie the whole piece together. When Beethoven died in 1827,he had some ideas for a 10th Symphony. But all that he left behind were some notes about the piece and a few "sketches" — short bits of written music.
In 2019,a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. To train an AI to help with the symphony, the team turned every piece of music that Beethoven ever wrote into a form the computer could understand.By feeding the program all of Beethoven's music, the AI could look for patterns in the way Beethoven wrote. This included, for example, how he re used simple melodies (旋律) all through a piece to create a theme,or how he moved between different parts of the symphony. Thus,it would be much easier for the special team to finish Beethoven's 10th Symphony.
One early test told the team they were on the right track. They took a few minutes of music created by the AI based on Beethoven's sketches, and played it for Beethoven experts, musicians, and reporters. No one could tell which parts had been written by Beethoven and which parts the AI made up.Finally, the AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits into a symphony. It took over two years, but the team was able to complete Beethoven's 10th Symphony. Not simply a melody, but 40 minutes of music for a full orchestra — a large group of musicians playing everything from string instruments, like violins, trumpets, flutes, drums, and piano.
(1) What does the writer intend to do in paragraph 1?______
A. To explain what artificial intelligence is.
B. To give readers a general idea of the text.
C. To tell readers how Beethoven is loved by people.
D. To show the reason for Beethoven's new symphony.
(2) What is the goal of the special team?______
A. To learn to play Beethoven's nine symphonies.
B. To feed all Beethoven's symphonies into computer.
C. To try to complete Beethoven's 10th Symphony.
D. To create a new piece of music based on the 10th Symphony.
(3) What can we infer from the last paragraph?______
A. The special team's great efforts paid off.
B. It was challenging for AI to complete the task.
C. Beethoven's sketches were too hard to figure out.
D. AI created simply a melody of Beethoven's 10th Symphony.
(4) Where is the text probably taken from?______
A. A brochure. B. A textbook. C. A music review. D. A news website.

Differences do set us apart, but we often forget that we are all human, and our culture is much more representative (有代表性的) of our differing environment than truly different people. Here are some tips on how to understand and admire cultural differences.
(1) In almost every single case, the only thing required to bridge cultural differences is an introduction. This isn't always easy, but the best thing to do is make an effort — go to the international folk music festival, eat in a restaurant where English isn't the first language, and say hello to the new family down the street.
Invite other cultures into your home. (2) Some people open their homes to exchange students with apps like Air BnB,while others might work through a church or charity to help provide for traveling groups.Even easier, you can simply invite people from other cultures over for dinner. (3)
Read as much about the local culture as you can before arriving. It is irresponsible to arrive in a new place without knowing how things usually run.You may get immediately shocked upon landing, which can make it harder to accept the culture later on. (4) Read online, check some books, and generally arrive well-informed.Having some knowledge beforehand will help with any culture shock.
Share parts of your own culture and life to encourage others to share theirs. One of the best things to bring while traveling is a set of photos from home, allowing you to bring people into your own life and culture from anywhere. (5) And learning is the key to understanding and, finally acceptance.
A.You can accept travelers or exchange students.
B.Therefore,be ready for some shocks or changes in the real world.
C.Seek out experiences, foods, and people who seem foreign to you.
D.Get out to see new places, pushing your comfort zone as much as possible.
E.Giving a little bit of yourself is the best way to learn a little bit about others.
F.You'll be surprised how much most people want to meet and talk to foreigners.
G.The best way to understand and admire cultural differences is over food and friendship.

Money Well Spent It was late spring, and we were living in a house in a rural part of Tennessee.I have always loved to garden, and this morning seemed like the perfect time to be working on the broad flowerbeds surrounding the old house we were remodeling (改建).
I jumped when I heard a soft voice. "Hello?Could I have a glass of water, please?" a seventeen or eighteen-year old girl asked hesitantly, looking at the ground.
"Of course," I said, taking off my gloves.I went into the house and came back out with a cold bottle of water. She drank most of the bottle with the first swig (大喝) and then turned as if to walk back down the road.
"Did your car break down and do you need some help?" I asked.
She shook her head and took a deep breath that ended somewhere between a sigh and a sob. There was a flash of anger. "My dad threw me out,so I'm going to live with my grandma in Memphis. But she can't come to get me,so she has a ticket for me at the bus station," said the girl.
"It is thirty miles from our house to the bus station in Clarksville. How about I driving you there?" I suggested.Tears welled up in her eyes, and she nodded. "Well, let's give your grandma a call," I said. "She's probably worried."
Within a few minutes, the girl was dialing her grandma on my phone. As soon as I talked to her,she confirmed the whole story. The girl's mother had died suddenly in an accident. Her dad had been coping with a lot of anger, and the two of them were not getting along.
At a second thought,I took out some extra cash from our emergency stash (储藏) in my top dresser drawer.About thirty minutes later,we pulled up to the bus station. But the bus wasn't scheduled to arrive for another two hours.
